Last month I spotted a darter at Lake Wendouree. Is this an unusual sighting?

A.H., Ballarat.
The darter is an irregular visitor to Lake Wendouree. Yours is the only recent report. It can be absent for several months or even years. When it appears, it usually stays for a few weeks, perhaps depending on the amount of small fish.
Most reports are of single birds, but sometimes two or more might be seen. There are now more reports than there were 40 years ago.
A darter is like a small-headed, long-necked cormorant. It has been reported at most of the larger waters in the Ballarat region, but it is an unpredictable visitor.
It is regularly seen perched on logs and low branches along rivers in northern Victoria.
