After starting the season so brightly, City’s performance has begun to dip in recent weeks, losing three of their last four matches – with their last game ending 2-1.
Coach Danny Gnjidic is wary of the threat posed by Sunshine George Cross who currently occupy fourth position on the table.
“They’ve done really well in the transfer window, they’ve signed a couple of players from overseas who have done really well.
“Compared to us at the moment they’re at the opposite end of the confidence spectrum. They’re coming off a really consistent five or six weeks so it certainly won’t be an easy game but these are the matches we want to win if we want to be competing for top honours in the future,” he said.
One of Gnjidic’s first objectives is to tidy up their slow starts – too often they have been prone to conceding in first-halfs this season.
During this recent form slump, Gnjidic has attempted to keep the message simple for his young group.
“I’ve basically just told them to go back and really enjoy their football, to forget about any overriding pressure,” he said.
He says that in order for the players to turn their form around, they must somehow recapture confidence – but he understands it is not always easy with inexperienced players.
“A lack of belief and confidence is something that is really hard to to recapture – especially with a young group.”
Despite the inconsistencies and frustrations that naturally come with leading a younger group, Gnjidic says he retains a positive outlook.
“It’s been really pleasing to see the younger guys come through because they will be the players that help us earn promotion, but at the same time we want to be winning games now,” he said.
City currently sit sixth on the table, six points behind Sunshine George Cross.
