The reigning premier displaced Lake Wendouree with a resolute 11-point win over Lakers in windy conditions anything but conducive to the quality of play expected in a top of the table encounter.
Lake Wendouree put itself in the box seat by shutting down the Cobras in the third term – being within nine points at the last change and kicking with the wind in the final quarter at Wendouree.
However, just as Lakers did, Bacchus Marsh closed up the game to keep Lake Wendouree at arm’s length.
Logan Blundell, Scott Sherlock and Dean Heta were the Cobras’ match-winners.
Blundell used his pace to break open the Lakers’ defence, Sherlock was relentless at the ball in close quarters and Heta was the dominant tall on the ground on a day when controlling the football overhead was difficult.
Lucas Anderson was again a cornerstone for Lakers, kicking five of their seven goals.
Each coach praised the work ethic of their players.
Bacchus Marsh coach Travis Hodgson was impressed with the way the Cobras dug deep and toughed it out after missing so many attacking opportunities.
Although dominant with the wind in the first quarter – Lake Wendouree had just one inside 50m – Bacchus Marsh wasteful with 3.9.
He acknowledged he believed they were in trouble at three quarter time, but determination had played a big part in getting the points.
Lake Wendouree’s Tim Malone was disappointed, but not too critical of his players.
He said he had been happy with the defensive effort, but believed they should have been more attacking into the wind in what he described as “dog fight.”
REDAN just got the job done against a brave East Point by 11 points at the Eastern Oval.
The Lions were down by eight points at three quarter time, but the ability to throw the likes of Liam Hoy, Tom Lamb and Dean Chester round in various positions enabled Redan to show a little more class in the run to the final siren
Redan coach Brendan Peace said it was good attribute to be able to do whatever it took to win.
“(However) we don’t want to put ourselves in situations where we have to play so hard at the end of the game to get the win.”
East Point coach Jake Bridges was buoyed by the Kangaroos’ effort, but also disappointed at the same time.
DARLEY crushed Sebastopol by 103 points at Darley Park.
Brian Graham kicked five goals and Harley Inglis four in a performance in which the big names such as Dan Roy, Chris Graham and Brad Inglis stood tall.
While Bacchus Marsh is two points clear of Lake Wendouree on top, while Darley and Redan have kicked three games clear of fifth-placed Sunbury.
East Point retains sixth despite its loss on percentage from Melton South and Melton.
North Ballarat City is home to Ballarat on Sunday.
