Barwon region gymnasts were on hand to show their skills for a launch on Saturday, including retired Australian Special Olympic gymnast Cassy Geffke.
“I’m here to help more kids do gymnastics,” Ms Geffke said. “Floor is most important – I like dancing – and bars. It’s about working hard and keeping healthy and fitness.”
Special Olympics Ballarat, for athletes with an intellectual disability, also has programs in swimming, ten-pin bowling, basketball and golf.
Ballarat Gymsports operations manager Don Pennell said the aim was to help athletes reach state championships, and to just have fun.
Mr Pennell said the centre had been increasing its inclusive programs the past year, including gym for people with vision impairment, autism and stroke survivors.
Ballarat mayor Samantha McIntosh, who officially opened the program, said the program was a great way to open minds, open opportunity and encourage an active lifestyle.
“It’s amazing when you find out what you can do and what you love doing,” Cr McIntosh said.
“This is great for parents, schools and young people of all abilities to know there is a little bit more opportunity to be involved. It’s great for creative minds.”
The Special Olympics program will be run in partnership with Special Olympics Ballarat, Gymnastics Victoria and Sports Central.
Classes start this Saturday.
