The Rebels again suffered a loss at the hands of regional under-18 football rival Geelong – 14.14 (98) to 5.12 (42).
They remain in 10th position, but are now six premiership points outside the top eight.
Gippsland Power (eighth) increased the gap with a surprise two-point win over Dandenong Stingray.
GWV lost contact with Geelong in the second quarter.
The Falcons took a while to break down the Rebels, but when they added a third goal for the term on 17 minutes the margin was out to 25 points and looking ominous.
Five unanswered goals for Geelong in the third put the game beyond reach of the Rebels.
Flynn Appleby worked hard for GWV along with Tom Morrish, who was a mid-season addition to the list and again impressed.
Jordan Johnston, Lloyd Meek and Aiden Domic were others who tried hard on a day when overall the Rebels were unable to match the second-placed Falcons.
The form of Johnston, Meek and Domic underlined their invitations in the past week to the AFL draft combine.
GWV now turns its attention to Murray Bushrangers, Dandenong Stingrays, Calder Cannons and Bendigo Pioneers with the hope of turning around its fortunes in the closing weeks of the season and make the top eight.
They play Dandenong and Calder at Mars Stadium.
