Saturday, Pugsley Buzzard @ Spa Bar, Daylesford
From the jazz cellars of Berlin to downtown New Orleans, Buzzard has dazzled audiences far and wide with his unique brand of piano-driven boogie and blazing stride in conjunction with his huge mezmerising voice. Louis Armstrong, Dr John, Tom Waits, a hint of Fats Domino all influence this unique singer/pianist.
Buzzard’s music spans the entire gamut of Nawlins sound, where you will be treated to, almost, equal parts gospel, swamp, barrelhouse, boogie and big ballads. Buzzard will be with three piece-band for this gig.
Friday, Harry Hookey @ Old Hepburn Hotel
Hookey’s chance encounter with the Beatles’ Sergeant Pepper’s album was the musical trigger for this singer songwriter of the alt/folk/rock/roots variety with a background in pop, punk and an obsession with Bob Dylan. He has showcased his music at the Americana festival in Nashville Tennessee, opened on a national Kasey Chambers and Shane Nicholson tour and performed with artists as diverse as Tim Rogers, Mick Thomas, the late Doc Neeson and Ash Grunwald.
His superb debut album Misdiagnosed features Nash Chambers producing and brothers Jack and Sam performing. The album includes some beautiful songwriting and production, with some nice influences. A distinctive, somehow familiar voice is at the forefront of this debut.
Saturday, Chris Wilson Band @ Old Hepburn Hotel
After multiple trips to the venue, this really is a gig to look forward to. Wilson in band mode is really another beast altogether, and fans of Crown of Thorns will be licking their lips at the news of this gig.
Wilson has been an essential part of blues and rock music in Australia since taking the stage with the Sole Twisters 30 years ago. Stints with Harum Scarum and Paul Kelly and the Coloured Girls followed. Collaborations with all the classic rock names of the ’80s and onward have ensued.
