Take the poolside soiree on tournament eve. In deference to fellow US Masters winner and golden oldie Mike Weir, Singh flipped a supplied right-handed wedge designed to hit plastic golf balls into the water for a nearest-the-pin contest the other way around. If Weir, that ground-breaking little leftie who won golf's most famous tournament, had to do it that way then why wouldn't he?

Singh not only slapped the ball closer than Weir, as well as another green jacket golden oldie, Angel Cabrera, and Fiji International ambassadors and former Bledisloe Cup sparring partners George Gregan and Justin Marshall, he did it like he simply expected to. Just a little reminder that everyone's playing by Vijay rules this week.

Vijay rules haven't been easy to abide by in the past, whether it be past feuds with the media or even the USPGA Tour, which he still has a lawsuit out against. But this week? The 54-year-old has just smiled, spruiked and said all the right things.

"I think they're all waiting for me to play good golf here," Singh said. "I've come close to playing good here, but it's nice to come here and see old friends.

"I just want to go out there and play the way I know how and take my mind away from so many distractions that go on over here when you get home. I think I can do that. I think if I just focus a little bit harder I can do that."

Last week Singh shuffled around the USPGA with a man less than half his age, trying to be the youngest player in history to win all four majors.

It wasn't an invitational event or carefully constructed pairing, but Singh meandered the fairways of Quail Hollow as Jordan Spieth motored because he was still good enough to be alongside the 24-year-old Texan on the leaderboard in the last major of the year. That was focus.

He made a point of rushing back to Fiji for his tournament - alongside Australian headline act Scott Hend and Kiwi Ryan Fox - on a course he talks about as if it were his own child.

The Fiji International layout, Natadola Bay, was designed by Singh and has undergone a major makeover for its grand reopening.

If ever there was the perfect mix of beauty and brutality, Singh has found it in 18 holes tucked away on the Fijian coast. The Pacific cuddles one side of the course, a perimeter where balls are literally lost on the beach.

And the wind ??? well, not even Vijay can control that. The rest of the field at the tri-sanctioned event, which also carries European and Asian Tour status, will be saying a little prayer before play gets under way on Thursday to ensure balls aren't picked up and blown sideways like some during Wednesday's pro-am.

On the course, Singh said: "I wanted it to be more playable for hotel guests [and] at the same time, challenging enough for pros to go out there and play.

"You just have to go out there, bear down and play hard. I'm not a great wind player, but I've played pretty good golf in windy conditions before. If you hit good, solid shots, it's going to pay off."

The best days of Singh, Weir and Cabrera are no doubt in the past, belonging to a time when all could rattle Tiger Woods on their given day. But the most eclectic group of green jacket giant killers have reunited in the Pacific. Vijay's home.

And there's a country hoping they don't ruin his party.
