It’s believed their car was travelling west along Lexton-Ararat Road between Amphitheatre and Lexton before it veered off the road, slamming into a tree and bursting into flames about 11.30am.
Police said one person died at the scene of the single-vehicle smash northwest of Ballarat.
It was yet to be determined if there were more occupants in the car, which was heavily burnt following the crash.
Victoria Police spokeswoman Natalie Savino said on Tuesday evening officers were still working to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“The car caught alight upon impact and was extensively damaged … police have not yet been able to identify the deceased,” she said.
CFA crews arrived on scene to contain the blaze, blocking both entrances to Lexton-Ararat Road for most of the day as police launched their investigation.
The road has two lanes and is sealed.
Anyone who witnessed Tuesday morning’s smash is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at crimestoppersvic.com.au.
