The carpet, which was attached to a 1700-strong petition against the development, was rolled down the steps and across Bourke Street.
Save Our Station member Min Myers said she hoped the petition would encourage the government to abandon its intention to construct a convention centre and apartment complex on the Lydiard Street site.
“Everybody wants improvements (at the station precinct) but most for a fully integrated transport hub,” Ms Myers said.
Heritage Victoria is in the process of reviewing developer Pellicano’s plans for the site and is expected to make a call on granting a heritage application by late September. Earlier this month the peak body requested more details about the development from Pellicano.
While the land at the station precinct remains under VicTrack’s control, it will be transferred to Pellicano following the completion of the project.
