C.L., Windermere.
The sacred kingfisher is a migrant to our area from New Guinea and Indonesia. It will return here in about one month. Its numbers vary from year to year, so it’s difficult to reliably predict where it might be found. However, there was a pair in the Swan Pool area at Lake Wendouree last year and they might return. Quite a few photographers took pictures there.
The sacred kingfisher is usually lightly scattered through open bushland of the district each spring and summer. Bushland dams and creeks are places to look. It is certainly an attractive blue-green bird and will reward a patient photographer.
