Werribee took a 1-0 lead into half-time before David King levelled the scores from close range. But it was not to be as Werribee again found the back of the net to skip clear and maintain a one-goal buffer at Morshead Park.
Disappointingly, given Whittlesea Ranges’ brilliant end to the season and Brunswick’s two-from-two finish, Ballarat slips to seventh on the table – not a true reflection of what has been a promising season.
Ballarat could only manage one win from its final seven outings, was that due to poor performance? a lack of motivation once its promotion hopes were shattered? or a combination of both? Regardless, City showed throughout the 28-week season it was the best of the rest, barring the clear top three, for much of the year.
It will continue to search for consistency, but there were plenty of positives throughout 2017.
One element it will be hoping to add to the group will be some extra class in its front half.
City lacked a genuine finisher for much of the season. The mid-season departure of Michael Trigger hurt, while what City had hoped would be his replacement, Englishmen Courtney Austin, had to return home to be with his family after a short stint with Ballarat.
City is hopeful he will return next season.
The Ballarat City players thanked its home crowd for their support throughout the season after the match.
