The team sat fourth heading into Sunday’s last home and away game, but suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Ballarat North United.
That allowed Warrnambool Rangers – which beat Ballarat 10-2 – to climb into the finals bracket at its expense.
Buninyong played with 10 men from late in the first half after Edwin North was red-carded in the 42nd minute of the clash.
Jeremy Beggs scored a penalty in the 34th minute for Ballarat North United before Alex Chester and Jack Gaffney sealed the result with goals in the second half.
Ballarat North United ended the regular rounds in second spot, four points behind league winners Sebastopol Vikings. Warrnambool climbed to third, with Forest Rangers fourth heading into finals.
The Vikings also claimed the league title in the women’s division one competition and now prepare for finals.
