A nine-man Vikings suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Surf Coast at St Georges Reserve, with the result leaving the team one point behind leaders Point Cook.
Daniel Firth received a straight red card before Laurence Tombe was sent from the pitch following a second yellow. Both players were dismissed in the second half.
With the scores locked 0-0 at the break, Surf Coast found the net twice before Kuanyjal Tuany netted a consolation for Sebastopol shortly before full time.
Vikings coach Corey Smith said he was “absolutely shattered” with the result on the weekend and labelled his side’s performance as “pretty underwhelming” given what was at stake.
“For the first time in the whole season we were the second best side,” Smith told The Courier.
“It’s the most deflating performance of the year, but obviously that’s in the past now and we have to look towards the game that we can control.”
Heading into the last round, five teams can still win the league title. Point Cook, which could have secured top spot at the weekend but lost 2-4, leads the way on 41 points. The Vikings are one of three sides on 40, with Surf Coast a further point behind.
Sebastopol will travel to Albion to battle the ninth-placed Western Eagles next weekend.
The two teams played out a 2-2 draw when they met back in June.
