The Strikers fought fiercely against the third-placed Redbacks at Morshead Park on Sunday and were only minutes away from a draw when the visitors scored in the 89th minute of the game.
Lisie Dobbs opened the Strikers’ scoring account with the first goal of the match in the 28th minute, but it did not take long for Eltham to respond with two goals of its own.
While the Redbacks led at half time, 2-1, Dobbs took a shot after a penalty for a handball and found the back of the net to level the scores.
But a late goal from Eltham delivered the fatal blow.
The Strikers are just one point clear of bottom-placed Lara United after Lara drew with Keilor Park.
It means the Strikers now have a must-win game against fifth-placed Melbourne Knights next week, the final round of the season, in order to secure their place in state league one.
