Frustratingly though, Vikings do not control of their own destiny in their bid to finish on top.
A shock loss to Surf Coast in their latest outing made sure of that.
They go into battle a hot favourite to beat ninth-placed Western Eagles at Albion on Saturday, not only most likely needing to win, but also needing ladder leader Point Cook to lose or at the most draw.
With the leading five teams within two points of each other, there are several possible outcomes.
The clearest outcome to get Sebastopol over the line would be a win for the Vikings and loss for Point Cook to Altona North.
With a clear-cut goal difference advantage, Sebastopol would be unassailable as it would make no difference what the chasing group of Bell Park, North Melbourne and Surf Coast did.
There are circumstances in which Viking could go to the top with a draw. Point Cook would still need to lose and then Bell Park, North Melbourne and Surf Coast do no better than draw.
The bottom line is, all Sebastopol can focus on is what it can control. That means getting a win and hoping it is enough.
