As a member of the tgraduating class from the James Morrison Academy he’s been taught by Morrison and some of the world’s best jazz artists.
The pianist got his musical start at school at Ballarat Clarendon College and returns on September 15 with James Morrison as a member of the JMA Jazz Orchestra.
“I moved from Ballarat to Mount Gamber in 2015 to start at JMA and I’ve been playing every day since – big band, large ensemble, small ensemble and individual practice,” Mr Walker said.
Students must also learn a second instrument so Mr Walker chose trumpet as he knew Morrison himself would be his teacher.
He’ll graduate this year but plans to stay on for an honours year where, instead of a thesis, students organise and play a national tour.
During his three years in Mount Gambier and touring the world playing jazz, Mr Walker has been a regular visitor to his old school to support and tutor the school’s Barry Currie stage band and VCE performance students.
BCC students will perform with James Morrison and the JMA Jazz Orchestra in a concert on Friday September 15 at 8pm at Federation University’s Founders Theatre.
