Originating in France in the early part of the 20th century, there are now over 800 licensed players and 24 clubs in Victoria.
Smythesdale Petanque Club Secretary Jeff Langdon said the game is a version of bowls that uses smaller steel balls than traditional bowls.
While it can be played on any surface, the same idea as traditional bowls applies to the game.
His interest in the game started after playing it at his French neighbour’s house.

On September 24, an open day will be held from 1pm at the Smythesdale Petanque Club, followed by a barbecue.
The club’s playing area is located in front of the Woady Yalloak Recreation Reserve in Heales Street, Smythesdale. Phone 0411 552 862 for more information.
