Speculation has been rife for months which sporting event would open the $1.6 billion Burswood stadium, with cricket, rugby union and the Dockers and Eagles all in the mix.

It was first thought the NRL had trumped the AFL with a rugby league double-header featuring NRL clubs the South Sydney Rabbitohs and Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs against yet-to-be-announced opponents scheduled for March 10.

But earlier this month, AFL boss Gillon McLachlan hinted he was eyeing off a game involving the Fremantle's women's team at the stadium in early February.

The McGowan government officially announced on Tuesday the Fremantle Dockers women's team would open the 60,000 seat stadium on February 10.

With tickets only $2 to the game and free transport to the stadium, Labor is boasting the event will attract 30,000 footy-goers, making it the biggest standalone women's sporting event ever held in Australia.

It would also eclipse the record for an AFLW's game, which was set in the first women's game between Carlton and Collingwood which attracted more than 22,000 fans.

"This is a great event for Perth Stadium and women's sport in general," Sports Minister Mick Murray said.

"Women's sport is growing at an incredible rate throughout WA and this is a great opportunity to see some of the country's best female footballers."

The Dockers women's team may still not be the first sporting event at the stadium, with an ODI international between Australia and England pencilled in for January 28, depending on whether the venue is finished in time.

The new Perth Stadium will officially be launched with a free community day on January 21.

Ticket-holders will be given the first chance to tour the venue and are set to experience a spectacular light show, food vans, live bands, artwork and a stadium tour.
