Ballarat-Sebastopol Cycling Club committee member Tim Canny is expecting to see at least 50 competitors take part in the race which kicks off at 9am.
The club is hopeful of gaining the services of talented Ballarat cycling export Liam White. Canny said White would be at the event and was “likely” to race, but would make a decision closer to the day as he continues his preparations for the Tour of Iran.
“It’s a big start to our season,” Canny said.
“I’m hoping there will be a lot of growth in our club as well as cycling in general.”
The criterium will be held on the newly-surfaced track. The track upgrade will make for more exciting racing according to Canny.
He said it was a much more cycler-friendly track to race on and increased the pace of the race, which would add to the spectacle of the event.
The season will be launched with Ballarat City Council mayor Samantha McIntosh, who has been a big supporter of the club, in attendance.
Beginning at 9am, A, B, C and D grade all get underway at once and finish up around 10. Canny added that the hope was to have 100 competitors at one of this season’s meets, which would top last year’s biggest return of 70.
