Liam Pickering said on Tuesday that Ablett had yet to make a final call on whether he would seek a trade from Gold Coast, remain with the Suns or even retire.

He said all possibilities would be canvassed but declared Ablett, 33, still had a great deal of football left in him.

Pickering's comments came at the launch of AFL Trade Radio where Fairfax Media can reveal:

* Geelong defender Jed Bews has signed a two-year contract extension, having enjoyed a break-out season.

* The management of West Coast wingman Andrew Gaff insist he is happy with the Eagles, and is looking forward to more of a midfield role now Matthew Priddis and Sam Mitchell have retired. Gaff is off contract next year and the Victorian has the opportunity to explore free agency.

In what shapes as another busy trade period next month, Ablett will be one of the headline acts.

His request for a trade back to Geelong for family reasons last year failed and it is almost certain he will again follow through on that request.

"He is contracted player to the Suns at the moment. I am catching up with Gary next week, which was always the plan. He is, obviously, in town for the Brownlow," Pickering said.

Asked if there was a chance Ablett could retire, as the man himself had stated earlier this year, Pickering said: "All those things are possibilities. As it sits now, he is a contracted Gold Coast player."

Pickering said there had been a "couple of clubs" that had asked the question of Ablett's intentions, suggesting Essendon had been one.

The Suns, still on the hunt for a new senior coach, have vowed to play hard ball, and that's likely to intensify considering Ablett claimed his fourth best and fairest this year despite playing in only 14 matches.

"I have had regular discussions with Scotty Clayton (list manager), regular discussions with Mark Evans (chief executive). When I sit down with Gary next week, we will be in a better position to talk about it," Pickering said.

If the Suns agree to explore a trade, they want an established player in return, with much, if not all, of this salary paid by the Cats to cover what they have already paid Ablett. His multi-million-dollar, three-year deal has been heavily front-ended over the first two, with next year to run.

Ablett has had soft-tissue injuries this year but Pickering says the champion midfielder-forward has plenty left to give.

"He has had a couple of years of injuries but he has been pretty durable. I would think he would be able to play another three or four years," Pickering said.

"The way he plays, he won the best and fairest this year on 13, 14 games, and his games were unbelievable. He will poll 20 votes in the Brownlow.

"He had a terrific season when he was available. He was just injured a bit. I think he has got more than a year or two left in him."

The Cats will have salary-cap room because Tom Lonergan and Andrew Mackie have announced their retirements while Daniel Menzel and Steven Motlop face uncertain futures. The $2.1 million increase in the cap through the new collective bargaining agreement will also help.

A third club could also be brought into the trade, with one player agent indicating Motlop could join Port Adelaide, with the Power supplying the Suns with a key midfielder. Hamish Hartlett has been mentioned as one option.

What could complicate Ablett's potential move is that the Cats have also expressed interest in Western Bulldog Jake Stringer and Greater Western Sydney's Devon Smith. However, the Blues have emerged as favourites to snare Smith.

Much of Ablett's wage could fall outside of the cap as an additional services agreement, helping smooth the deal.

He would also be a marketing and commercial boon for the Cats, who could sell themselves around skipper Joel Selwood, Patrick Dangerfield and Ablett.

Paul Connors, the manager of Suns co-captain Tom Lynch, said his client was unlikely to seek a contract extension over the pre-season. Lynch is contracted until the end of 2018.

"I don't think he will extend in the very near future ... because they haven't got a coach. I think they have a lot of challenges ahead," Connors said.

"He is totally committed to the club though, he is captain of the club, you won't meet a finer person.

"He loves the club. He could think of nothing better than playing finals with these boys and I think we'll let it play out for a little bit without it being a circus."
