Earlier this month the opposition, using parliamentary privilege, accused Mr Eideh - who represents the western suburbs in the upper house - of a rort in which money from his office's official printing budget was siphoned off and used to pay for ALP party memberships.

The claims remain unproved, but Parliament's presiding officers referred the allegations against Mr Eideh's staff to the state's Independent Broad-based Anti Corruption Commission.

The locks on Mr Eideh's office are believed to have been changed last week.

On Thursday, upper house President Bruce Atkinson confirmed in Parliament that Mr Eideh had requested the closure of his electorate office.

Mr Atkinson said the office had been closed to "give everybody confidence the matter that is before an external agency is examined appropriately.

"Indeed those actions were sought by Mr Eideh," Mr Atkinson said.

The allegation against Mr Eideh is that his office colluded with Keilor East printing company FM Printing to produce invoices for work that was never done, which were then presented to Parliament for payment.

The money was then allegedly used to pay for Labor Party memberships to inflate numbers in western suburbs branches.

Mr Eideh has previously said his office manager, Robert Mammarella, has assured him that his office was compliant with the rules.

On Thursday Mr Mammarella repeated his denial of any wrongdoing.

He told Fairfax Media the allegations had taken a heavy toll on his family, and his grandchildren had been abused at school.

"They've been told their grandfather is a thief. It's unbelievable," he said.

Opposition Leader Matthew Guy described the office closure as a "stunning" revelation.

"If members of Parliament and the Labor Party can't trust their own staff that they have to go to the extent of changing the locks on the door, that's pretty extraordinary," he said.

The woes deepened for Mr Eideh on Thursday, with the opposition moving to suspend him as deputy president of the upper house.

The motion is expected to be debated and put to a vote when Parliament returns in October.

However, Mr Atkinson said Mr Eideh should continue in his role until the motion was resolved.

Two Labor presiding officers have already been forced out in controversial circumstances during this parliamentary term.

Former lower house speaker Telmo Languiller and his deputy, Don Nardella, both stood aside after they were caught charging taxpayers over costs related to living in seaside residences far away from the electorates they represent.

FM Printing, which denies all wrongdoing, has also been used by federal Labor leader Bill Shorten, although not since 2011, and Mr Eideh's factional ally Senator Kim Carr.
