The former Ballarat boy will receive the honour at the 33rd Induction and Awards Gala Dinner on Thursday, October 12.
He will be the first footballer since Alex Jesaulenko in 2010, and just the 22nd player across 121 years of AFL/VFL history, to be awarded one of Australian sport’s highest honours.
Lockett, who was named an official legend of the Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2015, had a glittering playing career with St Kilda and Sydney, which spanned 281 games.
He is football’s greatest ever goal-kicker with 1360 majors.
Lockett won the Brownlow Medal in 1987, a season that saw the key forward boot 117 goals.
Induction into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame alongside the country’s best athletes in their respective sports will be another significant tribute to his career.
“It’s just one of those things when you think about it, it’s an incredible honour I’m very proud of it,” Lockett said.
