One woman died and many others were seriously injured when the bus they were travelling in left the Sunraysia Highway, rolled down an embankment and flipped on its side
The players, who were from various clubs throughout the BDBD, were returning to Ballarat from Mildura where they had played in a bowls tournament.
A total of 29 people were on the bus.
Everyone hurts because everyone knows each other."
- BDBD secretary John Holt
BDBD secretary John Holt told The Courier the decision to abandon all five divisions of the midweek pennant was an easy one to make.
Holt said he had received plenty of feedback in regards to the decision, all of which had been in support of the board’s course of action.
The midweek pennant competition was set to head into its third round of the 2017-18 season on Monday.
In division one, games were scheduled between Buninyong and Sebastopol, Daylesford and Creswick, BMS and Avenue, Midlands Golf and Central Wendouree and City Oval and Smeaton.
This round will simply be skipped and no points accrued.
Competition is then likely to resume with round four on Monday, October 23.
Holt said the local bowls fraternity was hurting following the incident.
“Everyone hurts because everyone knows each other,” Holt said.
“It is a tight knit community. Someone knows someone.”
Holt said the BDBD board was set to meet on Sunday night to discuss how it could assist and support those involved in the accident.
He said a decision on whether or not next Saturday’s round of weekend pennant would go ahead had yet to be made.
That competition is also scheduled to head into its third round next weekend.
