An Eagles plan is tipped to even trade their existing first pick at 13 in next month's draft for two later selections, preferably ranging from 20 to 30.

Approaching conclusion of this year's hectic trading period the Gold Coast Suns have picks at 20, 23 and 25.

But the Suns could use one of those appealing picks in a deal to get classy Dockers utility Lachie Weller who dropped a bombshell on Monday with a request to be swapped to Gold Coast.

Weller, 21, has played 47 senior games including being one of only four Dockers to play all 22 this year.

He averaged just under 20 disposals an outing this season but was a shock omission from Dockers top 10 fairest-and-best voting.

Dockers management has hit another snag in plans ahead of next month's national draft while attempting to protect a precious first round pick at number five.

Dockers recruiters are understood to have identified impressive big Victorian key forward and part-time ruckman Sam Hayes as a potential first pick at number five overall with original anticipation that West Australian product Aaron Naughton available later in the annual selection of young stars.

It is now understood that Collingwood talent spotters have fixed sights firmly at Naughton as a possible first round choice.

The Mandurah-born-and-raised All-Australian under-18 key defender is looming as a Magpies first pick at number six, straight after the Dockers.

Fremantle recruiters are now believed to be reconsidering whether to invest more heavily in a top quality local product, or take the classy Victorian to bolster scoring and forward line marking power.

Naughton, 18, is a rapidly rising power-marking key backliner with impressive foot disposal qualities.

He is a likely first round draft choice and is believed to have indicated in discussions with recruiting scouts his desire to be a long term one-team player regardless of whether he is chosen to head interstate or stay in his home town.

It is understood an Eagles recruiting strategy is to stockpile draft selections ready to replenish a playing list after emotional retirements last month from midfield superstars Matt Priddis and Sam Mitchell as well as versatile big man Drew Petrie and veteran defender Sam Butler.

West Australian product Brendon Ah Chee who wants to leave Port Adelaide to continue his stuttering career in his home state appears to be the only Eagles target in this week's closing days of annual trading.

Eagles list management is believed to have targeted securing at least five draft picks inside the first 50 choices.

West Coast currently has picks at 13, 31 and 49.

Even a trade of 13 for two selections would still leave West Coast scoring for further trading to orchestrate an overall accumulation of five choices.

West Coast is understood to be the most likely to select exciting West Aussie small forward goal-shark Liam Ryan who booted 73 goals with Subiaco in an impressive WAFL season this year.

Ryan, 21, was overlooked at last year's draft with raging uncertainty on his overall fitness levels and a lack of critical forward line tackling and defensive pressure credentials.

He is tipped to head to West Coast as a late draft selection or even among up to eight rookies the Eagles will have in a strong emphasis on young talent in a significant turnover of talent from this year's oldest AFL list.
