MSO education senior manager Jennifer Lang said the workshops were part of a longer term partnership.
“We’ve got a close connection with Ballarat,” she said.
“Our associate conductor Ben Northey was raised here, and we’re looking forward to returning twice in 2018 to strengthen the bond.
“It’s part of our initiative to embed our work in regional Victoria, and not just be considered a Melbourne orchestra.”
MSO received a $400,000 regional performing arts grant in June 2017.
More than 500 prep to year seven students were treated to a private concert before the workshops.
Ballarat Grammar head of strings Nicci Dellar said the technical skills of each student will be sharpened by playing alongside the MSO.
“They’ll be able to see pathways in music through the people sitting next to them,” she said.
“It’s going to be encouragement to keep going and see what they can achieve.”
