Knowles delivered a captain’s knock of 114 off just 107 balls, but he was quickly running out of partners to track down the Roosters 284 runs.
In what was an even bowling display, Englishmen Will Rogers topped the list with 3-40 from his 8.1 overs. Prabath Priyankara was the most economical of the bowlers while Dylan Price took 2-12 from two overs, including Knowles.
Meanwhile, Wendouree bowled the Mounties out for 219 to claim an 88-run victory.
The Red Caps struck early to eventually have Mt Clear 4-19, including the big wicket of Nathan Yates for 12. But that brought explosive all-rounder Curtis Townrow to the crease and the short boundaries and pacy outfield of Mt Clear number two promised to favour his attacking style – it did not take long to prove that.
Townrow scored 67 (off 73 balls) and put on 48 runs with opener Steve Nicholson (38 runs) before being joined by skipper Darcy Thomson (19 runs), the pair put on 62 runs before a pause in play for the tea break.
Red Caps skipper Gavin Webb admitted the tea break came at a great time for his group, as it stunted the momentum of the Mt Clear batsmen. Play resumed at 5-148 and with the second ball after tea, Townrow fell – a crucial wicket for Wendouree.
The reigning premiers took full control from that moment, as the runs dried up and the wickets fell consistently.
At White Flat, Golden Point bowled out East Ballarat for 188 to deliver a 72-run win.
Tristan Dixon fought hard down the order with the bat, making 75. But the Hawks were always on the back foot after losing six wickets before they clicked over three figures.
Daniel White took 3-35.
While Darley managed to defend 96 runs at Napoleons.
The Lions only added four more runs to its day one tally, before losing its final two wickets.
But they tore through Naps-Sebas, knocking them over for 69 runs – Matthew Cape taking six wickets.
