He moves into the expanded position after two years as head coach of the now disbanded North Ballarat Roosters in the VFL.
The appointment marks a return to the Rebels for Greig, who played in their only premiership side in 1997.
It is a similar pathway he took from player to ultimately coach of the Roosters, where he also followed in the footsteps of mentor Gerard FitzGerald – under whom he played in three VFL premierships.
Greig said moving to the Rebels would change his approach from a culture fully focused on winning to development of young male and female players across the region.
He said then there would of course be the development of coaches to ensure they got the best out of youngsters under their leadership.
AFL Victoria state coaching director Steve Teakel said the new position would have Greig working with regional stakeholders in developing and implementing a regional coaching strategy.
“We have an opportunity to work in collaboration with the commissions within the region, our development managers, leagues and clubs to further improve the standard of junior coaching,” he said.
“This is essential for the development and retention of young players in our game, ensuring consistent talent pathways.”
Rebels talent manager Phil Partington said the development of the new role would be beneficial to the region, providing a dedicated resource to assist junior coaches.
“Marc will bring a vast array of experience to this new role and be able to relate to and understand the needs of coaches in the region.”
