TWO men are dead after a head-on collision in Smythes Creek last night.A Ford BA Falcon and a Holden Statesman collided on the Glenelg Hwy between Masada Blvd and Wiltshire Lane about 8.30pm.The driver of the Statesman was thrown about 25m from his vehicle. He was taken to the Ballarat Health Services Base Hospital in a critical condition but died a short time later. The Falcon driver died at the scene. There were no passengers in either car.Senior Sergeant Pat Cleary said the crash was an "offset head-on type collision" and police would investigate if speed was a factor. The entire front section of the Statesman was torn off in the collision, with engine parts and debris strewn at least 50m down the highway between the vehicles.CFA units from Haddon and Smythes Creek and a rescue unit from Ballarat attended the scene.A section of the highway was closed when The Courier went to print last night.
