The collision occurred on a straight stretch of the Benalla-Yarrawonga Road in Devenish about 4.30pm on March 23.
Jim Freeman, a Melbourne Bicycle Touring Club member, was at the end of an extensive cycling tour when he was allegedly struck by the car. He died at the scene.
Police said the driver of the car stopped to assist an injured Mr Freeman and spoke with officers.
The Delacombe man has been charged with dangerous driving causing death and was bailed to appear at Wangaratta Magistrates’ Court on February 15.
The crash was in the same week the Victorian government refused to introduce a law to create a minimum passing distance for cars overtaking cyclists.
Mr Freeman was remembered as an active and popular club member, attending many rides and always helping others.
