Formerly the Capo Bros, acoustic musos Andy Vogel and Trevor Shard having been working their duo round the local circuit for the past couple of years.
Describing their sound as “rootsy, alt-country, bluesy folk”, their gig picks up the trail of their favourite songwriters and gives it a twist with their own special blend of tight harmonies, guitars, squeezebox and harmonica.
Saturday, Gillian and Terry @ Spa Bar, Daylesford
This duo plays acoustic versions of hits from classic bands such as Dragon, the Pretenders, Fleetwood Mac, Jimi Hendrix, Cold Chisel, Bob Marley, Hoodoo Gurus, the Divinyls, Kinks, Amy Winehouse, Led Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones and the Animals – all in the first set.
Sunday, Drowsy Maggies @ Old Hepburn Hotel
The 2015 Stars of the Lake award winners are four talented girls playing and singing a fresh approach to folk, Celtic and acoustic music.
With their sweet vocals and harmonies, fiery fiddle playing and a swinging rhythm section, this quartet will melt your heart one minute and have you grooving the next. Ballarat musicians Ari Lane (vocals and cajon) and Rhiannon McArthur (vocals, guitar) are joined by Adelaide fiddler Caity Brennan and Camperdown bassist Jordy Hickey.
Sunday, Ash Grunwald @ Theatre Royal, Castlemaine
This latest work from Grunwald is pretty much a break-up album.
Grunwald says: “not all relationships end with the wallowing heartache that has inspired a thousand songs before. Some feel more like a triumph of freedom, an act of survival from a toxic love.”
Hence the first single Ain’t My Problem Anymore, a spine-straightening break-up song that embodies the “we will not be broken” spirit of the chain gang songs that formed the foundation of deep Southern blues. Grunwald has sustained an admirable level of success in the music scene. He has been nominated for six ARIAs and three APRA awards, winning two of the latter.
