A multi-million dollar face lift for Lake Wendouree which is expected to be endorsed by Ballarat City Council on Wednesday will seek to remove traffic from the area while boosting amenities for cyclists, walkers and joggers.

A $1.5 million lighting upgrade around the Steve Moneghetti running track is among the most expensive high priority items in the master plan, while a further $500,000 is recommended for building a new footpath linking Victoria Park and Wendouree Parade while also improving the existing walking track.
A further 10 pedestrian crossings have also been recommended to improve amenity while also slowing traffic.
While funding is yet to be allocated to the more than $7.3 million project, Ballarat City mayor Samantha McIntosh said she hoped elements of the project would gain attention the government and opposition ahead of the 2018 state election.
“We have been talking to state government making sure we’re in the right position for various grants,” Mr McIntosh said. “Some of the works may be funded by council but many will need state or federal assistance.”
Upgrading car parking at St Patrick’s Point is also near the top of council’s to-do list, while the installation of four outdoor gyms around the lake is listed as a medium-term project. The move to adopt the master plan comes after about 18 months of community consultation where residents have been able to have their say on priorities.
Council estimates about 700,000 people use Lake Wendouree every year.
