The man, who is in his 40s, was attempting to cut down the big tree along Diamonds Lane before it fell the wrong way and struck his head about 7.30pm.
“He then suffered a cardiac arrest,” Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman Lina Hawi said on Tuesday morning.
It’s believed the man was temporarily trapped in the cherry picker’s bucket after he was hit.
However, those on scene were eventually able to lower him down as an air ambulance helicopter arrived, landing in nearby paddocks.
“The man was airlifted to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with a head injury in a serious condition,” Ms Hawi said.
Diamonds Lane, which is just south of Lal Lal’s famous waterfall, is heavily wooded and has residential houses along it.
The man remains under medical care in Melbourne.
