The appeal run by Kmart and the Salvation Army has collected more than eight million presents since 1987.
Both the Wendouree and Delacombe Kmart stores are participating in 2017.
The Salvation Army said during December they assist three times more people compared to any other month, due to extra bills and holiday activities during the festive season, as well as back-to-school costs.
Community members who wish to donate can leave a gift or make a cash contribution at participating stores. Gifts do not need to be wrapped. Online donations can be made at kmart.com.au/wishingtree.
