The Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Institute had been looking for something different when it took notice of illustrator Travis Price’s Ballarat series of vintage prints.
When the research institute got in touch with Price about commissioning a piece, the internationally-acclaimed artist said he would do it for free.
“Like most people, I have had bad experiences with family members who have had cancer,” Price said.
“I am pretty stoked to be part of the event and to do something community-based locally.”
The initial brief was to create an event poster people would want to hang on their walls.
“Over the years, people will be able to come back and buy a different poster,” Price said.
“It’s no different to the Australian Open or the old posters from the footy grand finals.
“I like the idea of hanging something on your walls that you actually have a connection to, especially if you’ve taken part in something and there is a reason why you want to keep it.”
Price said the artwork was full of retro references after drawing inspiration from posters of the 1950s and 1960s, and old Tour de France posters.
“I just really like the simplicity of it and there is a hierarchy – the funny thing about design is that everything you do is for a reason,” Price said.
“What is happening in this poster is the rider heading up on the angle is actually pointing you towards the main header of the event.”
The posters will be released in three different colour waves – yellow, purple and aqua green.
Price worked as a commercial designer in Melbourne before deciding to become a freelance illustrator.
He has since worked for the likes of Nike, the Australian Open and Mambo.
With a sneak peek of the poster displayed at the cycle classic launch last week, Price said he had already received great feedback and inquiries about buying the works.
Signed copies of the artwork can be purchased with all proceeds donated to programs at the Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Institute.
Pricing is $100 for an unframed poster and $350 for framing included.
