HERE are the first images of the new Wendouree Train Station. The design, released exclusively to The Courier, show a sleek, modern building with red and grey panels and a sloping roof.Stephen Moynihan, spokesman for Public Transport Minister Lynne Kosky, said it was a striking structure, inspired by the work of famous Australian artist Jeffrey Smart.Preliminary works are currently under way on the new station, located near the corner of Gillies and Howitt streets, and the station will be built by civil engineering firm Cut and Fill Pty Ltd.The station, which was first announced in September 2006, was initially due for completion by 2008.However, a series of contract and design problems have pushed the completion date back to mid-2009.My Moynihan said they wanted to make sure they got the project right."The scope changed and we wanted to make sure all the engineering and design was correct before proceeding with the project," he said.Mr Moynihan said Ms Kosky wanted to thank the residents of Wendouree and Ballarat for their continued patience."It's not as easy as just building a building, you've got to ensure the track is safe so it's a bit more complex," he said."It will definitely be worth the wait."The new station will have heating and air-conditioning, a 200-space car park, bus and taxi bays and bike racks and lockers. It is expected to service at least 27,000 residents from Wendouree, Alfredton, Lake Wendouree, Learmonth, and Miners Rest."The Brumby Government is taking action to improve regional rail services and I am sure this new station will be well used and become a real hub for the community," Ms Kosky said."The new station will not only provide residents with much needed transport infrastructure, but an inviting, comfortable and safe place."Residents will have an opportunity to be involved in the design of a station mural greeting commuters as they approach the station building. Ballarat West MLA Karen Overington said it was a great chance for the community to add a local flavour to their station."The Department of Transport and Ballarat City Council will work in partnership to engage a local artist to prepare a number of mural designs," she said."The community will then be given an opportunity to vote on their preferred design."I would encourage everyone to vote when the mural designs are released later this year and be part of history in the making."
