But despite this huge hurdle, Mr Browning is still thinking of others, something he is renowned for in the community.
Under the umbrella of The Browning Project, the businessman, best known as the owner of The George Hotel, is organising a gala fundraiser for the Ballarat Regional Integrated Cancer Centre.
The Browning Project gala charity dinner on December 7 at the Ballarat Mining Exchange was inspired by Mr Browning’s recent diagnosis and driven by a group of dedicated volunteers.
Despite what they are going through, Gary and his family are compelled to do something to help others, to give back in some way.

One hundred per cent of profits from the charity event will go towards the care, treatment and research at BRICC, in particular the Wellness Centre at Ballarat Health Services Base Hospital.
It’s Mr Browning’s intention to help others like himself who have been touched by cancer.
Ballarat Health Services chief executive officer Dale Fraser described Mr Browning as Ballarat’s unsung success story.
“Despite what they are going through, Gary and his family are compelled to do something to help others, to give back in some way,” Mr Fraser said.
“The support, in-kind and otherwise, for this project, which will be a premier event in Ballarat, is phenomenal and a mark of Gary’s reputation.
“This (event) will be a massive living legacy for a man who is vastly popular throughout the entire region. Funds raised will make a significant difference to the lives of people with cancer,” Mr Fraser said.
Many individuals and businesses have already come forward with donations of food, drinks, staff as well as auction items and ticket sales for the gala dinner, but more are needed.
Tickets are $199 each and includes MC Elliot Goblet, a three-course meal, drinks, a grand auction, silent auction and live entertainment.
