Hector Bruno, 41, appeared briefly at the Ballarat Magistrates Court on Thursday for a committal hearing.
The court was told Bruno's defence required more time to gather medical material before a committal hearing date is set.
Police allege Bruno attempted to murder his 64-year-old father with a knife at a Greendale home on July 21, 2017.
Bruno's father, also known as Hector Bruno, was flown to The Alfred hospital with abdominal wounds.
Magistrate Gregory Robinson remanded Bruno in custody to appear at court by video link on March 22
