When it comes to the 2018 Burrumbeet Cup, there’s one young man calling the shots.
Sixteen-year-old Dayne Barry from Swan Hill called three races on the New Years Day racecard, and is already a seasoned professional despite his age.
His career began at the Wycheproof Races in 2014, when he was just 12.
Dayne said he’d always loved listening to racecalls, having spent time at the track with his uncle, renowned Ballarat horse trainer Darren Weir
“A fair crowd comes out to Burrumbeet every year, it’s good,” he said.
“Some racing clubs and other racecallers like Ric McIntosh are generous enough to give me a call, and there’s nothing that can really beat that type of practice.
“You’ve always got to practice, even if that’s at your local race meeting in a box calling to yourself.
“When they come into the mounting yard, I start reading out the names and matching them to the silks.
“At the moment I’d like to do this as a career, not sure if that’ll change, but it’s something I’d like to have a go at.”
