More than 65,000 people have applied for a tertiary place through the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre, seeking a spot in one of more than 1800 courses that are offered in the state.
Monash University is the destination where almost one in four students want to study, with 14,832 putting a course there as their first preference. A total of 11,736 people want to study at RMIT, while 11,006 are hoping to enrol at Melbourne University.
The most sought after courses for school leavers are Arts at Melbourne University (which 2529 people put as their first preference), Science at Melbourne University (2312) and Medicine at Monash University (1576).
Other popular courses include Nursing at Australian Catholic University and Dentistry at La Trobe University.
The most sought after course at RMIT is Criminology and Psychology (299 first choice applicants), Nursing is the most popular course at Deakin, while Swinburne's most popular stream is Film and Television.
Students were able to change their preferences after receiving their ATAR score in December.
The ATAR score a student receives is a strong indication of whether they will get offered a place in the course of their choice, as most have a clearly-in ATAR requirement.
The data shows that a large number of students decided to change their preferences after receiving their ATAR score. In December, 2113 students had nominated Medicine at Monash as their first preference. But by the time the change of preference period closed, 537 fewer people had listed the course as their first choice.
