The 18-hole circuit in Creswick has long been known as a difficult one for golfers, but resort manager Stephen Roberts has revealed some key changes ahead of the two-day RACV Goldfields Super6 event, which takes place this Saturday and Sunday.
Roberts said fairways have been widened on holes two, four, five, six, nine and 11, while green surrounds have been re-turfed on 14 and 16.
“We are looking forward to welcoming professional golf back to the resort, and are certain the players will appreciate the improvements that RACV has made to the course and resort facilities,” Roberts said.
“The course will continue to test the professionals from the back tees under tournament conditions, whilst being more approachable for less experienced players looking for an enjoyable day out.”
The Super6 is a new and exciting event, which includes an 18-hole qualifying round on the Saturday and six-hole match play elimination rounds for the 24 amateur and 24 professional qualifiers on Sunday to determine the winner.
RACV Goldfields Resort’s last major golf tournament was the 2013 Victorian PGA Championship, which it hosted when run by a previous operator.
New Zealand’s Gareth Paddison won the inaugural Victorian PGA Championship at Creswick in 2012 before David McKenzie won the trophy the following year.
McKenzie is one of more than 50 entrants for this weekend’s competition.
Past Australian PGA champion Nathan Holman is also on the list of players.
Holman claimed the 2015 title with a play-off victory over the United States’ Harold Varner III and South African Dylan Frittelli.
Ashley Hall, who was runner-up to star Jordan Spieth at the 2016 Australian Open, has also entered, as has Matthew Millar, who took out the New Zealand Masters last week.
Following the Super6, the Creswick course will be home to another major event the following weekend, with the RACV Goldfields Legends Pro-Am locked in for Sunday, January 28.
