The Ballarat resident broke Kimberley Mickle’s mark of 66.83m with a huge performance at an Atheltics Victoria meet in Ringwood.
Mitchell, who is a four-time Ballarat Sportswoman of the Year award winner, set the new national record at 67.58m.
Just last month, Mitchell produced a personal best mark of 66.73m, which was just 10 centimetres short of the Australian record.
After the record-breaking effort, Mickle tweeted to congratulate Mitchell.
“Massive congrats to Kathryn Mitchell who just threw a new woman’s Australian record!!! Seriously couldn’t be prouder of her! So many years, so many tough times and now finally rewarded!!!!,” she tweeted.
The performance comes just a couple of months out from the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.
If selected, it will be Mitchell’s fourth appearance at the Games.
