After 60 years operating from its beloved 706 Sturt Street, Ballarat Group Practice has relocated to a brand new, state-of-the-art medical facility at 1730A Sturt Street.
The relocation was essential for the future development of the Ballarat Group Practice and the changing healthcare needs of the Ballarat community, particularly in the growth corridor of Ballarat West.
The demand for more GPs and services was becoming quite evident and the new medical centre has been able to accommodate this, providing more space for consulting rooms and additional services, to keep up with the rising population and patient care within the Ballarat community
The new premises overlook the stunning and historic Arch of Victory, the grand entry to the city’s Avenue of Honour. Similarly, Ballarat Group Practice comes with its own fascinating history. As many doctors were away on active service during the Second World War, those who were doing civilian service realised the value of being able to work together and found co-operation was essential. Consequently, the idea of partnership and group practice was recognised and established.
Initially, the Ballarat Group Practice was started by two partners at a single location, officially opening on August 1, 1946. This has since grown to now be owned and operated by 14 practitioners, who work within BGP across the three practice locations.

The Practice is committed to delivering quality general health care to all ages and strives to provide a service that is competent, caring and consistent. The new location, Ballarat Group Practice at the Arch, is an impressive, purpose-built facility incorporating 15 consulting rooms and spacious, comfortable waiting areas for patients.
Designed by Project Now for Integra Group, the design of the medical centre is agile and responsive to its context, with each elevation responding in kind to its own outlook, taking inspiration from the recent addition to the former Ballarat Golf Club clubhouse building, Ballarat’s heritage, and its site context. The Practice itself is accessed via a lift or up the faceted stairs to the first floor, where visitors are greeted by a raised ceiling to the reception and waiting areas before entering the private consulting rooms. These balance the outward views and protect and maintain privacy both to and from the building.
The nursing area within the practice is very impressive with five treatment rooms and two fully equipped theatre rooms. Allied Health services, pathology, a soon-to-open pharmacy, and onsite parking make it convenient for patients.
The highly skilled teams, consisting of 34 GPs and 19 nurses across the three sites, can assist with the management of all general medical concerns and are focused on providing excellence in all aspects of patient healthcare.
The Practice is accredited with AGPAL, which is based upon standards set by the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners. The GPs assist each other with difficult patient issues, and have a wide range of specialists and service providers who they liaise with and refer to for patients with more complex needs.
Ballarat Group Practice is incorporating allied health services for patients, currently providing a diabetic educator and podiatrist alongside their comprehensive range of medical services; including after-hours care, home and aged care visits, antenatal care, men’s, women’s and children’s health services, medical acupuncture, immunisations and travel vaccinations, chronic disease management and health assessments, mental health services, Work Cover, employment and driving medicals, hearing tests, chronic/acute wound care, minor procedures and a range of other nursing services.
The Ballarat Group Practice is committed to delivering consistent, quality healthcare, and to improving the health and wellbeing outcomes for all our patients. New patients are being accepted at all three practices – you can phone for an appointment, book online through the website or download the HotDoc app on your mobile device. Standard consultations are by appointment only, which can be booked via the website or by calling the Practice, which provides bulk billing and private services.
BGP at the forefront of education
Ballarat Group Practice is proudly the largest regional accredited teaching medical practice of registrars in western Victoria. General Practitioners play an important role within the community; they are the first port of call for anyone who falls ill, this is why practitioners and it is important that they continue to enhance, teach and train future health professionals.
Our experienced practitioners are dedicated to training the GP registrars assisting them to develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours necessary to function as confident, independent general practitioners.
Registrars gain valuable practical experience in different training locations, including hospitals, rural and urban practices, and specialised medical centres. They also have the opportunity to acquire experience in extended skills/advanced specialised training, procedural general practice and academic posts. Ballarat Group Practice has a strong focus and long history with welcoming registrars as they are the next generation of GPs and it is vital for the future development of the health industry in rural Victoria.
Having registrars work alongside established doctors not only keeps the practice open to new ideas and methods, but encourages us to remain at the forefront of contemporary practice. We learn from registrars as much as we teach and guide them.
In 2018, Ballarat Group Practice welcomes six GP Registrars across three locations. They are qualified Medical Practitioners who have completed their medical degrees and have worked many years often within the local hospital system.
