It’s a space for residents of the aged care home to get in touch with memories and skills from their younger years and take on a new challenge in the shed.
BUPA Ballarat aged care home resident Graham Muir said he had been pushing for a woodworking shed since he first moved into the centre over a year ago.
“I have been a carpenter all my life, but I have been bored to tears in here. I’ll be spending as much time as I can in this shed,” he said.
Jeanette Evans, whose husband Eddie Evans lives at the nursing home, said working in the shed would be a great pastime for Eddie who used to be a farmer.
“The men tend to be overlooked as far as activities are concerned. They spend too much time sitting in chairs, so this will be great to get them active,” Mrs Evans said.
BUPA Ballarat general manager Jisha Abraham said the shed would help give residents independence to fulfill their desire to be active.
“It is wonderful to see our residents faces lit up. I had a resident who has been on my door since I started asking when this is opening. Today he said ‘finally the day is here’. I can feel their excitement,” she said.
