Last year’s Head of the Lake played host to Loreto’s maiden victory of the prestigious event and 12 months on it is eager to taste that feeling once again.
Loreto will enter Sunday’s race as warm favourites in what is an even girls’ firsts field. Rowing Director Gabi Howard spoke volumes of the group’s hunger to improve and repeat the feats of last year while she believes her crew will take an edge over the competition with the return of triumphant 2017 rowers Molly Grech and Laura Foley.
“I’m just so impressed with their tenacity and their hunger to achieve more every time...they just don’t settle,” Howard said.
“To see what we did last year, obviously we’re all very hungry to achieve great things again...it’s definitely an advantage we have, you can’t deny the experience and the support they can give to the rest of the crew.”

Loreto College has been the standout across the lead-up regattas, most recently claiming victory at the Firbank Girls Regatta on the Barwon River. Howard said it has been clear of Ballarat Grammar and Ballarat Clarendon College on most occasions, but only just.
She expected a tight race, but had great confidence in her girls and said the expectations were once again high.
“We understand how tough the competition is and we’re really respectful of the standard of Ballarat rowing, we know it’ll be tough but we have high expectations again.
“Our goals this year are just as big as they were last year.”
Co-captain Laura Foley added she was hoping to replicate last year’s success. She said the crew had done all it could in its preparations and it was now just a matter of staying calm and executing on the day.
“We are looking for that same feeling again, but on the day it’s anyone’s race,” Foley said.
Fellow captain Molly Grech was excited to be joined by three new crew members.
“Me and Laura have rowed together through all of our seasons and we’re just excited about how good the new members of the crew are,” Grech said.
