A heroic palomino horse has fought off a large, vicious dog who attacked its rider in Linton.

Linton Police say a woman in her 50s was riding along Lovers Lane in Linton, when she was approached by an aggressive, large-breed dog.
The dog bit the woman’s leg and dragged her off the horse. The horse responded in a protective manner, rushing the dog and chasing it in an easterly direction down the bush track and away from the woman.
When the horse was retrieved, it had large gashes on its neck sustained from the dog, which required stitches from a veterinarian. The dog is still at large.
Ambulance Victoria confirmed they attended the scene on Lovers Lane at 12.30pm. A women in her 50s was taken to Ballarat Base Hospital in a stable condition, with injuries to her lower leg.
Leading Senior Constable Tony Walker said residents could contact Golden Plains Shire rangers or the Linton Police Station if they saw a large stray dog in the area.
