The star rower is one of five finalists for the Ballarat Sportswoman of the Year honour, which will be announced on Thursday night.
To be presented by the Sportsmen’s Association of Australia Ballarat associates branch, the award will recognise our standout female athlete from last year.
Werry was named the Ballarat Sportsperson of the Year last month.
Her outstanding 2017 included standout performances in rowing’s women’s four division. Highlights for the former Ballarat Clarendon College student were gold medals in two World Rowing Cup events and then the World Rowing Championships.
Other finalists include distance runner Tash Fraser, basketballer Abigail Wehrung, eight-ball player Kolbe Poole and race walker Rachel Tallent.
Fraser won a stack of events last year, headlined by success at the Two Bays Trail Race (56km) and the Ned Kelly Chase (100km), where she broke previous records. The 30-year-old also set a world record for the 50km treadmill run.
Wehrung enjoyed victory on the big stage with the Emerging Opals, which took gold at the World University Games in Chinese Taipei, while Poole achieved rankings of fourth in the world and first at both Australian and Victorian level during 2017.
Tallent’s year was headlined by her selection for Australia to compete in the World Athletics Championships. She eventually pulled out of the titles due to injury.
Last year, javelin star Kathryn Mitchell claimed a fourth Ballarat Sportswoman of the Year award.
Thursday night’s function will be held at the Ballarat Golf Club.
The SAA will also name the Ballarat Sportsgirl of the Year and present an encouragement award, as well as recognise the contribution of an administrator.
Brigette McGuire, the sister of Collingwood president and media personality Eddie, is the night’s guest speaker.
