Stella Savy and Dani Fry formed the duo for a backyard gig (Rock above the Vege Garden) in the mid-2000s, writing and performing their own songs encompassing such issues as how Stella made a proper curry.
That first rehearsal, we sat down and we hadn’t played these songs for 10 years, and it was just like – it all fell into to place. Well, there were a couple of clangers and laughs.

Dani Fry says their output was a lot of fun.
“It’s mostly original, and the songs are silly, nonsensical – but the curry song is one of our most popular.”
Hip-popatamus was born of the pronunciation of the word ‘hippopotamus’ by Stella’s father, who is from the Seychelles. Fry says its a very special chance for the pair to reunite.
“It’s great, we’re such great friends and we don’t see each other very often at all, we’re so busy,” says Dani Fry.

Hip-popatamus are appearing in the Minerva Space at the Ballaarat Mechanics’ Institute with a huge line-up of other bands, film and art installations, all for the cost of a gold coin donation.
The bands are a HOUSE OF MUSIC presentation, and starts at 7pm on Saturday evening, accompanied by Did Someone Here Say Ballarat video retrospective from 1993 to 2001. A film installation by artist Tiffany Titshall and sculpture by Georgie Green are also part of the BMI experience. Gold coin donation accepted and bar facilities available.
