These maintenance workers in their harnesses had an unparalleled view of the northern part of Ballarat as they worked on a transmission tower just off Holmes Street on Wednesday afternoon.
Carefully working their way up the galvanised steel tower, hooking and unhooking their karabiners to safety points as they climbed, the workers drew admiration from onlookers safely rooted on the ground.
“I’ll bet they get paid more than we do down here,” said one watcher.
“There is no way that you could get me up there, no matter how much pay,” said another as a worker climbed up the outside of a stanchion hand over hand high overhead.
“I fall over enough down here.”
The area they were working above is also a hive of activity below, with new developments approved for a series of sites along Creswick Road and the entrance to Armstrong Street, and speculation that the former depot station site will be redeveloped by council as a multi-level carpark.
