Neighbourhood Watch volunteers will be handing out one-way safety screws to drivers this weekend at the Masonic Hall at 616 Barkly Street from 9am until 12pm as part of Operation Safe Plate.
Police say this is an opportunity for the public to be educated about car theft.
“Stolen number plates are used by criminals to put on other cars to commit further offences such as the theft of petrol and burglaries,” a police officer said.
“To help stop your number plate being stolen you can replace screws on each plate with a one-way screws. Screws can be screwed in normally but require a special tool to be removed.”
The screws can be obtained with a gold coin donation and is supported by Neighbourhood Watch and Ballarat SES.
