Police out on patrol saw the vehicle on Scott Parade in Ballarat East fully engulfed while out on patrol about 6.15am on Sunday.
Firefighters were quickly called to extinguish the red BA Ford Falcon wagon, which police have since confirmed was stolen.
On Sunday morning the burnt out vehicle remained at the site, stationed across several car parks near the corner of Scott Parade and Rowe Street.
Sergeant Paul Fitzgerald said it was unknown whether the vehicle had broken down at the central Ballarat location.
“Obviously given the location the potential for a spreading fire or damage to the surrounds is immense,” Sergeant Fitzgerald said.
Police inquiries are ongoing. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
